גב הספר [מאת עמוס לויתן]: זרה בציון מקפל בשמו ובמשמעותו את יצירתה השירית של ג'ניס רביבו כפי שנתגבשה בספריה: את ספרה הראשון זרה שהופיע בספריית פועלים ב-1997 ואת
חטיבת שיריה האחרונה Zion by Itself
באנגלית החותמת את הספר הנוכחי.
כן כלולים בו שני ספריה האחרים תרגילי חיסור שהופיע בהוצאת גוונים ב-2000 ואחרי העזריאלי לפני הקריה שהופיע בהוצאת כרמל ב-2004. וכן שירים חדשים בעברית ובאנגלית שנכתבו מאז וטרם כונסו בספר ותרגומי שירה.
ג'ניס רביבו לבית סילברמן, ילידת בוסטון ארה"ב, עלתה לישראל בשלהי שנות ה-80 אך לא נטשה את זיקתה לתרבות שבה נולדה. ראשוני שיריה פורסמו בהמלצת
חיים גורי במוסף 'משא' של
עיתון 'דבר' בשנת 1984 עוד בעת שלמדה ספרות ולשון עברית במכללה העברית בוסטון.

את ספרה הראשון ערך המשורר נתן יונתן ז"ל שעמד על סגולותיה כמשוררת וגם הפקיד בידה לימים
Within the Song to Live את תרגום מבחר שיריו לאנגלית
שהופיע בלוויית תקליטור משיריו שהלחין גידי קורן בביצוע להקת האחים והאחיות בשנת 2005. רבות
למדה גם משיחותיה לאורך השנים עם הסופר המנוח ס. יזהר.
שירתה מציעה מהלך שירי מורכב:
Zion אף שעשתה את ציון ארץ בחירתה נותרה בה זרה, ואף ששבה לכתוב בשפה זרה נותרה
מושא כתיבתה.
המבע השירי השואב ממסורות מגוונות של השירה העברית לרבדיה ושל השירה האנגלית לתקופותיה, מגיע באומנותה לשיאים של צלילות, עושר, תחכום ואירוניה. מעל לכל זו שירת אהבה נועזת ונואשת, שהדילמה האנושית יהודית ונשית לכודה בכל שיר כמעט משיריה, אך הופכת בכוחה של אמנות גדולה לחוויה מאלפת ומענגת. ספר זה הכולל את יצירתה המגוונת בשתי הלשונות הוא הזדמנות ראשונה להכרות מקיפה עם כלל יצירתה של משוררת מקורית ומסקרנת זו.

Introduces her New Book Zara Betzion
A Celebration of Poetry and Music on
December 1 in Tel Aviv
Janice Rebibo, American-born Hebrew poet, will
introduce her new book, Zara
Betzion, at a celebration of poetry and music at
7:30 p.m. on Saturday, December
1. The event, to be held at Tel Aviv’s
Felicja Blumental Music Center , is open
to the public and free of
charge.
The book launching will feature Rebibo’s readings from the book
and appearances
by well-known singers, critics and other poets. Most of the
program’s
participants have become friends and collaborators with Rebibo
since she made
aliyah from the United States in 1987.
Zara Betzion is
a collection of Rebibo’s poems written from 1984 to 2006. It
includes three
previously published books as well as new work in Hebrew and
English. Her
poetry reflects how she remains a foreigner in Zion although it is
her chosen
land.
At the book event, The Brothers & the Sisters folk group will
perform songs
from texts by Janice Rebibo and several modern Israeli poets
(including Yehuda
Amichai, Leah Goldberg and Ze’ev Jabotinsky). Susie Miller
and Varda Sagi of the
singing group will premier two songs based on two of
Rebibo’s works set to
music by composer Gidi Koren.
During the
program, Koren will discuss Rebibo’s translation of Natan Yonatan’s
poetry
that he has also set to music. Rebibo recently translated a book (with
CD) of
Yonatan’s poetry into English including the hit songs Kmo Balada and
Im
Ha’olam.
Amos Levitan, the book’s editor, and Menahem Ben, literary
critic, will discuss
Rebibo’s work. Talma Zurawel, Hebrew language professor,
will talk about the
poet’s start in Hebrew literature. And Hospital Clown
Madame Pomodoro will keep
the participants in line.
Zara Betzion,
published by Gvanim, is Rebibo’s fourth book of Hebrew poetry.
Many of her
poems have also appeared in Israel ’s literary journals and
newspaper
supplements – ranging from Davar 22 years ago to Yedioth Ahronot and
Maariv
this fall. Using allusions, humor and eroticism, her poems show
how
relationships are shaped by language, culture, religion, and
politics.
The gala event, honoring Rebibo’s poetry, will be held at the
Felicja Blumental
Music Center at 26 Bialik Street , Tel Aviv. All are
welcome.
