Janice Silverman Rebibo bio

Janice Rebibo

Poet Janice Silverman Rebibo, a Massachusetts native and native English speaker, received a President of Israel award for Zara Betzion [a stranger-woman in Zion], her 2007 volume of collected Hebrew poetry. She is the author of four books of original Hebrew poetry, a popular volume of translations to English of the poetry of Natan Yonatan, and two books of poetry written in English. My Beautiful Ballooning Heart, her collected English language poetry, was published in 2013. Her English language poetry chapbook, How Many Edens, was published in the spring of 2014.
In Israel, critics called Rebibo’s work “a bold blend of two imposing literary traditions” and “a strategic breakthrough that added something new to the war of independence of Israel’s consciousness.” Her 1985 debut in print was initiated by poet Chaim Gouri in the literary pages of Davar. Her first Hebrew poetry collection, Zara (a stranger-woman, referring to the figure in Proverbs), was published by Sifriat Poalim in 1997 by series editor Natan Yonatan. She later served as Yonatan's chief translator, completing Within the Song to Live, his bilingual volume of selected work, following that popular poet’s death in 2004.
For over two decades, her Hebrew poetry was published and reviewed widely in Israel’s major newspapers and literary journals. Her poem Lifnei Shana, depicting her heartbreaking déjà vu of President Kennedy’s murder when she learned of the assassination of Prime Minister Rabin was featured in Maariv on the first anniversary of Rabin’s death. Zara Betzion: shirim 1984-2006 (a stranger-woman in Zion - collected poems, forward by Amos Levitan), Rebibo’s fourth book, includes one chapter of English poems and one of translations from English to Hebrew of poems by Louise Gluck, Stanley Moss and Denise Levertov. Zara Betzion garnered for Rebibo a President of Israel Award, the Israel Lottery Commission’s Cultural Award and the Steiner Prize from Hebrew College.
In the United States, her poetry has been characterized as “fresh and compelling”, having “an intriguing sense of humor”, and showing “just how globally oriented the world has become”. Rebibo’s poem, "My Beautiful Ballooning Heart”, was nominated by Muddy River Poetry Review for a 2012 Pushcart Prize. She was the Soul-LitFeature Poet for summer 2013. She is the 2014 Featured Poet in Brookline’s 5th Annual Jewish Poetry Fest. Rebibo’s English language poetry appears in many print anthologies and online journals in Israel and the United States.
Rebibo, who first visited Israel at the age of twenty-one, now calls both Brookline, Massachusetts, and Rehovot, Israel, home. She has written pop lyrics and classical libretti for works produced in Boston, Tel Aviv and Moscow, and at Carnegie Hall. Hear her popular song Hazman Ozel (music by Gidi Koren) on YouTube performed by HaAchim vehaAchayot http://youtu.be/116ywOHgOjk.
In the late 1980’s, she completed the two-year Beit Ariela Poetry Writing Workshop led by several of Israel’s legendary writers and editors, who continued to mentor her in the years that followed. Since then, she has always welcomed the challenge of leading poetry writing workshops in her local communities in Israel and North America and most recently at Brandeis University and Middlebury College.
She holds a BA and an MA in Jewish Studies with concentrations in Hebrew language and literature from Hebrew College. Her expanded thesis on biblical intertextuality, “Why Quote God? Three Modern Israeli Poets Allude to Sacred Texts”, is forthcoming in print. She has translated and edited children’s books and a wide range of scholarly texts – from literature, linguistics and education to medicine and hi-tech entrepreneurship. RAVSAK, the Jewish Community Day School Network, chose her to judge both the 2013 and the 2014 North American Hebrew Poetry Contests for grades 1-12. She collaborated on their Hebrew poetry curriculum.
The Hadassah Brandeis Institute (HBI) has invited her to serve as 2014 Scholar in Residence at Brandeis University, launching a study of Gender and the Teaching of Hebrew.
Since 1989, she has worked with non-profits dedicated to the revitalization of the Hebrew language and to the promotion of tolerance and cooperation among disparate sectors of Israeli society, including The Academy of the Hebrew Language (Givat Ram), SchoolsOnLine Israel and others. She is currently the Senior Program Officer and Technology Director of Hebrew at the Center, Newton MA, now associated with the newly launched Institute for the Advancement of Hebrew at Middlebury College, VT.

Within the Song to Live
