Misdoings of This or That Life

Misdoings of This or That Life

While half the people forget for years at a time, a quarter
will narrate in detail the misdoings of a past life,
more readily than their misdeeds of late,
anticipating that your response will be limited to
a gentle sort of astonishment, more curious than judgmental.

While simultaneous lives thrill us with their overlappings,
crisscrossings, cut corners, near-collisions and clenched fists,
past lives serve up your basic bread and butter sandwiches, but
thicker than you can get your mouth around without the filling
plopping out onto the floor to be overlooked hopefully forever.

Approximately one quarter of everyone on the planet
is preoccupied with trying to remember what they know they
must have done in a past life.  I’m so busy with present misdoings
that I sometimes forget for years at a time what I did.
